Once upon a time the Jade Emperor created a Great Race. He decreed that 13 animals should enter – and the years on the calendar would be named for each animal in the order they reached the finish line. During the race, the animals would have to cross a mighty river. To cut a long story short, all the animals bar one finished the race. The cunning Rat came first. He pushed the Cat into the river, and then hitched a ride on the back of the Ox. The Dog should have been a serious contender. But he spent too much time playing in the river. And of course, the Pig came last - after stopping for a snack and a snooze.
